Default Question for Dr. Nase - skin biopsy results post IPL

I have had many IPL treatments which have helped me alot. However, I have started developing a strange condition that I believe is related to all of the IPL + dermacool treatments. It is called osteoma cutis. These are small bumps that resemble milia and are in an acne configuration mostly on my cheeks. These small bumps are tiny fracgments of bone that have growm abnormally within the skin. After a very bad flush on the last IPL treatment, I noticed many more than before. I also had never notoced these all of the time that I was just using IPL without the dermacool. I had one removed for analysis through punch biopsy. Since the argon laser is out ot the question, what about having some of them removed with this method. The one area did not heal badly and did not seem to trigger flushing? Any insight would be appreciated.

Jane,

I am sorry to hear about this condition. It is frustrating. It is actually much more apt to happen in rosacea spontaneously because the constant inflamamtion is seen as a traumatic event; likewise, the photoderm could have excacerbated it.

Let me tell you up front to not take my advice for anything on this subject more than text on a page to be brought into a physician.

1. This is a reoccuring condition once it has started
2. I personally dont like the idea of excision with hands
3. The newest depth guided CO2 laser would be worth a shot but quite expensive
4. Just a thought -- retin A and other exfoliants sometimes do a great job on allowing the bone spurs to actually come out. I am not recommending retin-A, but this means that photodynamic therapy with laser or photoderm may work much better, but you would really need to discuss how they think your condition might respond to that trauma.

Please keep us all posted and feel free to private mail me anytime because I miss a lot of posts lately.

Good luck.

Is this a common symptom or manifestation of rosacea?

Thanks
Trey

Default DR NASE/ OSTEOMA CUTIS

DR NASE, DOES IPL CAUSE OSTEOMA CUTIS AND DOES THE AMOUNT OF IPL TREATMENTS AFFECT THE POSSIBILITY OF GETTING THIS DISORDER.

HI,

I dont know. I dont think so though. It is a response by an individual's body to trauma -- I know of many rosacea sufferers that crossed the 20 plus laser treatments without any sign of this............ but, I cant say for sure how to pre-select those that might???
