I am so frustrated...from everything I've read, too, and reading a couple posts here, rosacea cannot be detected through biopsy. My derm, however, did 2 biopsies on me on Friday. According to her, if it's rosacea, it will show up in the biopsy. I wanted so badly to question her, but she's already frustrated with me b/c I read WAY too much on the internet and pretty much question everything she says/does!

I am so convinced what's on my face is steroid rosacea and the meds she gave me on Friday (Oracea and Metrogel) are already helping. I don't know what the biopsy will show, since it probably won't show rosacea, and I'm afraid she's going to stop the current meds since she'll be convinced it's not rosacea (even though she said looking at me on Friday, it looked like rosacea).

As she put it, "The skin doesn't lie"

Grrr....

Glad that regimen worked for you if your claim is genuine, but I would caution acne rosacea sufferers to be very wary of sulfacetamides. My first derm put me on Ovace cleanser and face cream and all it succeeded in doing was turn me dryer, flakier, and redder overall than just in my flushing areas. I suffered for a month and a half, until she was convinced that was the wrong way to go.

Thank god for fotofacials.

That wasn't an advertisement, sorry I have been busy and forgot to check back.

This is a new drug (1 month old) in the U.S., so I don't think it's available in the UK yet. It's barely available here, I've had to chase it down. I guess I'm a bit of a guinea pig, but since everything else has been total failure this is fine.

Hmmm, considering her knowledge (biopsy being a diagnostic tool for rosacea) vs your knowledge, my vote is that you know more and she is one of those impatient types that doesn't like being challenged.

Check my pics for some really nasty steroid induced rosacea: http://forum.rosaceagroup.org/viewtopic.php?t=3899

I talk about what I did and what works to wean your skin off steroid, and how long the process takes to do it right and with a minimum of discomfort.

What an asinine thing to say. You have my sympathy, she sounds imperious and dismissive. I would find her insufferable. Please don't let her attitude stop you from doing your own work. She may come up with something that makes sense with the biopsy, or you may have to find a new doctor.

Wow! You've really been through a lot! I'm glad you are on the mend. I have pics posted in the photo section of what mine looked like last week. It flared up even more the day after I took the photos. I'm already seeing improvement on Oracea and Metrogel, and it's only been four days. I have a ways to go, but at least when I go back to the derm on Friday I can say, "SEE! I told you so!!!"

We compromised- I let her do the biopsies and she agreed to let me try the steroid rosacea treatment. I think she is just doing it to humor me and shut me up. She's in for a surprise when she sees that it is actually working- and better than any of the steroid treatments she said would "knock it out of me".

I wish other derms weren't so hard to get into (the earliest I've found is AUGUST!!) or I'd have a new one by now. I need to string her along for meds, though. Although, I bet my allergist would prescribe me what I want!

I had read that Protopic can help steroid rosacea. Do you think your skin was just too sensitive, or is it not a good treatment for it?

I can only speak from what I have experienced, and somewhat from what I've read, but I definitely would hesitate to use Protopic or Elidel for rosacea prone skin and would never apply it to skin with steroid rosacea. I have posted on studies that show that some folks actually get a steroid rosacea type flare from these two immunodulators.

Your rosacea skin is hyper sensitive right now, made even more so because of the steroids. Nothing is going to "knock it out of the you" (your derm is scary), and a steroid rebound would be fierce. I went to every derm in town (we don't have many) and finally went to the 'beauty doc' at the end of them all. He was the only one that knew about rosacea and even though he pushes his laser, he helped me alot. I just go to my regular GP now. I find that as long as we are informed and are not requesting anything that can be harmful they tend to be accommodating. When it comes to skin a GP can be just as stumped as the patient. If you have a trusting relationship, or at least a respectful one, with your allergist than I would focus my energies on creating a plan of action with him.

A biopsy on a rosacea flare must have been terribly painful. I am very curious as to what she would be looking for.

I look forward to following your progress.

Best wishes.
Corinna

I have been through the same thing...I have steroid induced (actually steroid "exagerated" roasacea, and I was given steroids to treat it which made it so much worse...if your derm doesn't listen to you or has issues with you doing your own research and second guessing her, get a new derm...it is your body and your face, and doctors who play god can seriously damage their patients health. best of luck

No I am a woman from New York. Are there a lot of impostors on this board or something? I thought I was asking a simple question and making a simple statement about this new combination of soap and medication!

Anyway, to update, I have been using clarifoam and Cerave soap for almost a month now, and my skin looks better than it has in years.

So, no I'm not advertising...if you want to check out some of my previous posts I had a really unfortunate experience with laser and spent the last year trying to fix it. The laser was too harsh for my skin and burnt the top layer of my skin on my cheeks. So I needed to switch to this soap which is supposed to fix damage, and then use a topical antibiotic to bring the inflammation down. So maybe what I have is seb derm in reality? I have a blushing and flushing problem but laser didn't work so well and this therapy seems to be helping. So who knows...
