Default Another Mepacrine Succes Story

Hey whats goin on guys. I just wanted to let you guys know that Mepacrine is also slowly giving me my life back just like halfpipe and llamar's story. Their posts are actually where i found out about anti malarials and mepacrine for rosacea .

Heres a little background info. Ever since i could remember i've had rosacea. When i look back at baby picture all the way up to high school, I've had rosy cheeks, flushing and blushing. In May 2008 i underwent ETS for my severe blushing., which was a total success. My blushing and red rosy cheeks were GONE. Then unfortunately about Five Months later, it came back into full effect, and even worse. It must have messed up something in body because not only was the blushing back, but SEVERE flushing brought on by weather, sun, alcohol, hot foods, so on and so on, which i never had before.

So from then until now (I'm 20 yrs old) I've undergone mutiple IPL's and medications. Clarithromycin and Noritate at first which actaully worked for about one month n then just stopped for some reason. So then i tried Proponlol, clonidine, and mirtazapine, suggested by users on this website, but to no avail. I tried numerous lasers, I went to a spa in pittsburgh which was the biggest mistake ever because the braud had no idea what she was doing. So then i came across Dr. Harvey Jay in New York City, he was extremely expensive, not to mention on top of transportation, hotel and food. But his lasers actaully worked. The only reason i stopped was cuz it was so damn expensive, as soon as i get rich I'm defntly going back to him. But anyways, my flushing was still very severe....i was at wits end, and my derm knew it, so i when i suggested the mepacrine she went right for it, no hesitation. So she had it compounded at pharmacy in Columbus (Columbus Ohio, USA). All i had to do was give them my credit card info and they compounded it and sent it out. I got it within two weeks. It came out to be about $90 with shipping and handling for a two month supply. It has been almost one month since the first pill. I take it every day at noon (500mg). It comes in a clear capsule and the medication is like a lime green / lime yellow.

But as i said it is slowly giving me my life back. It took about two weeks to kick in ( no initial flushing by the way), but after about two weeks i could def. tell it was helping. It took away about 70% of the burning stinging sensation that i got every day. You know how ur face feels like plastic cuz of the burning -- thats gone too. And as far as the flushing/redness, its taken it down about 50 - 60 %, and i can only imagine this will get better with time.

The yellowing of the skin side effect didn't happen to me, but i've noticed is that it lets get an awesome tan. I work in the sun everyday...im a landscaper...and it helps you get a good tan to almost mask the redness also.

So my point is people...this stuff works...It isnt a cure, but its damn close to it.

llamar, halfpipe, if your reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your story for me to read, which got me to where i am right now. Im actaully HAPPY now. I can go out in the sun and not worry about a burning purple flush coming. I can now actaully consider college, a girlfriend, more social occasions and so on, because of this.. Thank you again.

Any questions, feel free to ask..........................

Haven't made a visit to this forum since feb and then i see this thread! pleased to hear these sorts of storeys, it is why i posted the thread.

One thing though....500mg? are you sure you aren't on a different anti milarial? you should be on 100mg a day max.

Glad it is working for you though bro. Things will continue to get better!

take care

Any unpleasant side effects?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mepacrine

How does this drug work to stop the flushing, does anybody know?

I understand that rosacea has many causes; estrogen withdrawal in women; thyroid problems, hormone imbalances, sunburn. Am wondering which of these cases Mepacrine improves.

In some cases of rosacea it can help switch the condition off but there is no way of predicting for certain which ones it will help. It's not a first line treatment but worth a try in stubborn cases of rosacea where the standard treatments haven't worked.

As with antibiotics / red light treatment etc Mepacrine can have a anti-inflammatory effect on rosacea and offer control.

Any dermatologist worth his salt should have it in his tool box for rosacea.

Thanks, Peter.

What are the drawbacks of this line of treatment, and how often does it seem to work?

Why doesn't everybody try it?

Hi

I think Mepacrine either works or it doesn't but certainly worth a try in stubborn cases of rosacea where the usual standard treatments haven't helped. I suspect some dermatologists are not aware of it's use with rosacea but I know Dr Tony Chu sometimes prescribes it in difficult cases. I have no idea what the success rate is when prescribed and I am not aware of any clinical studies that have been carried out with this drug. Like most things with rosacea it's just a matter of trial and error until you find something that works for your individual case.

The only main side effect that I was aware of was that it can turn your skin slightly yellow but this is reversible when the drug is stopped. Very rarely it can effect the eyes but I think that's very unlikely with the dosage for rosacea.

I cannot remember now but I definitely asked my derm about Mepacrine and I don't think we can get it in the states...I think that's why he couldn't/wouldn't prescribe it but am not 100% positive on this now as it was a while ago that I asked.
He did do some research on it but I cannot remember his analysis of the drug. I will ask him again when I see him.
