Default extreme redness after shaving on shaved area-what to do?

    Hello guys,

No matter what I do, running a blade down to my beard makes me go bright red, especially beard area. It looks so bad. I have to find a job and leaving my beard unshaved is not option. Does anyone experince the same thing? I am afraid if it happens so often then my skin on beard area will become permanently red. Can you share your experiences with electric shavers?

    Francois,

Have you tried Lavender Oil, the essential oil with nothing added, I get mine from the health food store. For me it doesn't sting or burn and calms the red and helps prevent razor rash. If you try it maybe on try on one small area of your face to make sure you don't react.

I gave up using a blade on my face about a year ago. It really has helped with the overall condition of my face. I would highly recommend trying to switch to a foil type electric shaver. After trying the panasonic versions I find the braun activator works best for me. It took months to get used to shaving with an electric..but it is really easier on your face..more gentle. if the razor wasnt causing razor burn I had a hard time finding a shaving cream that didnt irritate my face and after shaves usually irritated it as well. I was using aveeno shave gel..that seemed to be ok on my face and a double bladed razor. That is the most gentle I could get a razor to be. The 3 and 4 bladed razors just cut too close and caused to much irritation.

If you buy a braun shaver they have a 30 day return policy on it..its worth a try.

Most guys have that same problem. I hate recommending such an expensive razor, but the new Panasonic Linear Razor at the Sharper image with a 90 degree angle and high speeds is the most amazing razor. It is the blue one. Expensive, but it pays for itself in under a year and it should be good for 10.

The best Braun out there is also a good choice. I couldnt get it to cut my thick beard area though nearly as well, but I have a thick beard.

Thank you Dr. Nase and Ken,

I will definitely buy the braun or the panasonic model. They assure the money back guarantee or I would have wasted my money if it doesnt work. I also wonder if during this adoption time, does electic shaver irritate your face each time until your skin gets use to it?

Thank you so much. Shaving is one of the problems that avoid me from getting a job. Once I find a solution, I will make my money

If you start shaving as close as possible it does take a few weeks to get use to in most cases. However, if you just lightly shave (and leave a tiny bit of hair) your skin should acclimate much more quickly and without the irritation.

    Two pieces of advice:
Shaving wet or with cream with these new razors will give you an even closer shave, but will increase irritation potential. Try dry.

Pre shaving liquids to make the hairs stand up are not recommended and are not needed with these great shavers.

While most want to put after shave on or "ones that calm irritation" it is indeed rare to find one that works with rosacea.

Keep it simple. The Sharper image has a 90 day money back guarantee.

This site has alot of good information and tips on switching to and using an electric shaver. Its called "Electric Razor Rap". Its been as valuable to me as the Rosacea Support Forums. There is an adjustment period. Rotary shavers caused me alot of irritation..but the foil type of the braun activator I got used to in about a week. Its best to take it easy and go for a shave that looks close..not necessarily feels close at first. Shaving with a blade you remove a layer of skin each time so it feels smoother...after a while and some practice you can get a close shave with an electric. I no longer have the need for irritating after shaves. I just use the braun activator..no pre shave product at all. Most of them have alcohol in them that can really sting. You want your face to be dry though. I shave before I shower. And during the summer sometimes I turn on a fan to keep my face cool. Once you start sweating or your face is moist the electrics dont work very well.
