Default clindamycin phosphate lotion compounded with spironolactone?

    Dr. Nase,

Have you heard about this compounded medication being used to treat sub. type 2 rosacea patients? Being a male, would I have an increased risk of using this topically similar to the side effects associated with taking spironolactone orally? I know males cannot take this orally because of an increased risk of gynecomastia. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hello Ray,

Yes, it does work for some resistant cases, especially those related to high DHT levels around the sebaceous glands.

You can use it topically without the breast growth side effect of oral. It is definitely worth a try.

    Default So frustrating

Thanks for the input Dr. Nase. I was just looking at the ingredients and I am angry to find that there is cetostearyl alcohol present in the lotion at 2.5%. However, I wonder if the benefits of the active ingredients of clindamycin phosphate and spironolactone outweigh the risks of this irritant. I am not sure if the gel form of this drug(brand name is cleocin I believe), could be compounded with spironolactone. I know that alcohols are a common irritant when reading about them in your book, even at low percentages in comparison with the rest of the ingredients in the medication. I am using the compounded med once at night under the noritate. I guess only time will tell if it is an irritant. My derm just prescribed Ovace face wash and Plexion SCT to be used in conjunction with the noritate and compound med . Gosh, so many new things to try yet so frustrating.

    Thanks again,
    Ray
