    Default Remeron and aspartame

    Hello all,

Have started taking Remeron (For 3 weeks) in an effort to control my rosacea. I have the soltab version of Remeron and noticed it has aspartame in it. It is a small amount of aspartame but wonder if it is enough to cause a reaction. So far flushing hasn't got much better- In fact a lttle worse. Could the aspartame be having a negative effect? After I take it every night I do not notice any extra flushing. As far as sensitivity to apsartame is concerned- I'm not sure about that because I never really consume anything with aspartame in it. It's one of the many things I avoid in case it make makes my rosacea worse without knowing whether or not it reallly is one of my triggers.

    Be grateful for any advice

    Oliver

hi there i was on remeron 30mg pm until recently. i didnt notice any impact on my flushing until i increased the dose from 15mg a day to 30mg, and that was after about 8 weeks. so there was no improvement for me until then. i think it did help, but ive since found more benefit with a beta blocker so am no longer taking it

It seems that some flushers respond really well to mirtazapine (remeron) and others don't... No idea why!
Is it possible to ask your doc for another brand of remeron? The generic version might not have aspartame, mine certainly hasn't (generic mirtazapine).
For me 15 mg works better than 30 mg, but they both make me much better than without it. I saw improvement after a week.
Perhaps you can try a brand without aspartame so you can eliminate any possible problem factors and then see if it helps you or not? If you don't see improvement after 5 weeks I think it's safe to say it doesn't help you... Hope it will! Like Lucy wrote, there are other medications out there as well that tackle the flushing to a degree, like some beta blockers and meds like clonidine. Unfortunately they all have some side effects, mainly tiredness. This tends to wear off with time, but not entirely...
    best wishes

I initially took the Soltab version of Mirtazapine (called Remeron). However, I got pustules from taking it - each tablet is like eating a sweet, something which I was unable to tolerate at the time - very sugary. I tried the generic version of Mirtazapine instead and this worked much better. I would also say that if you suffer from pustules at all, mirtazapine is not very good for these, although it does help a lot of people with flushing. To help prevent pustules while on Mirtazapine, 15mg of zinc a day helps (some brands help better than others in my experience of the zinc).

Yeah I agree Ant, I heard from a few rosaceans who used mirtazapine that it brought out more paps, although certainly not for everyone.
It has anti inflamatory properties and seems to calm my inflamation down sortof, and the times I get paps are mainly when I eat chocolate and
bad foods. But yes, some people mention extra p&p's while on this med, so try it out by all means if your flushing is debilitating enough, but keep an eye
on side effects like those paps.
