Default Finally saw Dr Chu and he prescribed me trimethoprim?

I feel a bit disheartened right now as I have waited two years to see Dr Chu at the hammersmith hospital and I was in there for about 5 minutes. He has prescribed me trimethoprim 200mg twice daily which he told me will clear up my p&ps (he has also prescribed me clonidine for the flushing).

However when I search the forums for this drug there are very few threads about it. Does anyone know what it is and why Chu would prescribe me with it?

it means taking the scripts from Chu to the chemist's and buying the drugs.

Just wondering, b/c you sounded unhappy that you got such a cursory consultation and unsure about the two drugs he prescribed.

    Hello ajb.23,

I am so sorry that you only had 5 minutes with prof Chu and that you left unsure of what your prescrptions were for.

    I found this info:

Trimethoprim is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu).

I presume P & P's are quite an issue for you too?

Clonidine has indeed helped many with flushing. (what dose has he prescibed).

I would keep a daily diary of your progress (or not) also any side effects, which may be transient.

    Good luck!

ajb my first appointment with Dr Chu was also very quick. I have pm'd you but please put your trust in him his medications have helped me with my rosacea. My GP also treated me with antibiotics for vascular rosacea and nothing helped. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to find the right medications as everybody reacts differently but I believe that Dr Chu is very experienced and knowledgable about rosacea and acne and I am sure he will help you.

Ghost, Im assuming you are not from the UK, it's a bit different here, I saw Chu as a private patient and I now have to wait until I have seen my GP to get a prescription.

It just kind of confused me as I had never heard of anyone being prescribed this before and Chu didn't really let me ask any questions which I found rude considering it cost £180 .. it has left me feeling so down as I waited two years to be able to afford it. He was nice and everything but I wish I knew why he had prescribed me that, even searching on this forum yields very little mention of the drug.

Just dont know what to do

Did you see this in my reply?

I did see it yes but like I said, there is very little mention of it elsewhere on this forum so I am confused as to why he wanted to prescribe me it..isnt that understandable?

Ditto. In my case his lack of curiosity about co-morbidities was fairly disasterous leading to delay in diagnosing a far more serious cause of flushing and aggravation of other connective-tissue related circulation problems. Luckily I did not take the anti-androgens he prescribed as they potentially could have made my other condition much worse.

Take care and always double-check the side effects of any medication prescribed before taking. I'd be particularly careful with this medication if you have any sort of autoimmune disease (e.g. hypothyroidism) as it can cause thrombocytopenia and megaloblastic anaemia.
