Default anyone recommend a good foundation i can use that wont aggravate my perioral derm,

    hi there

im feeling pretty ugly right now and the worst bit is having to work in a large company with lots of people looking at the rash around my mouth

im scared to use make up but i need to cover up the redness etc so i can actually face the world

does anyone use a good cover up foundation that does not aggravate the condition?

also im taking doxcycline everyday which can cause sun sensitivity and the weather is getting pretty hot here, can you recommend a good oil free sun cream without any nasties in it too that have been ok with this condition

    many thanks

I have had the worst time this past year with makeup. I have tried everything under the sun--I am not kidding. My skin is just so sensitive since I have acquired this condition that there is very little I can tolerate. I think I have both rosacea and seb derm. I have the rosacea under control but the seb derm requires constant rotation of various products.

One thing is for sure--there is not a single mass-produced mineral makeup product on the market that works for me. All of them make me crazy itchy and red and splotchy. I am sensitive to Bismuth Oxychloride, Titanium Dioxide (the absolute worst for me!), Mica and Sericite. So, I started making my own. I use only Zinc Oxide, Kaolin Clay and Iron Oxides, nothing more. There are several companies that sell these ingredients. I use Coastal Scents or TKB Trading.

On the days I am feeling too dry for the mineral makeup, I mix iron oxides with my own moisturizer/sunscreen to make my own makeup that does not irritate my skin.

It really is not as difficult as it sounds, and your skin will appreciate the less is more approach.

Forgot to mention that I use either a zinc cream (diaper cream) for my sunscreen or Devita sunscreen which has no nasties and is very light in texture.

for foundation, keep what you have but use a primer under it. You don't have to get anything fancy. Monistat anti-chafing gel is the same thing used in pricey primers. Just smooth it on, your skin will be a silk canvas.

I do this: SPF moisturizer then primer then foundation.

currently I use la prairie moisturizer with spf. But you have to experiment! After I use this up (and it's a big jar) I will look at cheaper options at the health food store.

i use Monistat anti-chafe gel (as I had in my earlier post) for primer. it's 100% dimethicone.

The dimethicone should protect your skin against the foundation.

If you are interested in trying your own makeup, I can send you some recipes. Just let me know. The hard part is mixing the color. You'll have to experiment. The trick is to add very little color at a time (minute teeny amounts) and then blend it really well and keep adding until you get it right. I use a combination of yellow oxide, a little brown oxide, and very, very little red oxide. I have a fair complexion.

The suggestion of a primer is a good one. Unfortunately for me, I am sensitive to all methicones--dimethicone, cyclomethicone, etc. There are some on the market that are methicone free, but I have not tried them. Again, you just have to experiment.

My zinc cream makes a pretty good primer but I have to add the iron oxides or it is too pasty white.

BTW, I have a big problem with titanium dioxide. Not a very common sensitivity, but people do have it. It is a common ingredient in toothpaste. So, you might see if switching to a toothpaste without it, like Tom's or just plain baking soda, makes a difference to your perioral dermatitis.

My diaper cream has 25% zinc oxide, so it makes a good sunscreen. It is Pasta de Lassar and sounds similar to the Sudocrem but with less ingredients. Like Sudocrem, it contains lanolin, and some people cannot tolerate it. It's never bothered me, and I've had acne and sensitive skin all my adult life. Yes, it is very white, so that's why I add iron oxides to it.
