In 1996 and again in 2003 I was diagnosed with reflux. The first time it mysteriously went away after taking omeprizole for a year and then going off the drug on my own. The next time, not so lucky. And, about 2005 I was diagnosed with rosacea but it went untreated until I changed family doctors and insisted on seeing a dermatologist in 2007, after it had increased dramatically on my forehead every time I exerted myself in exercise. My breakout was at first slight acne-like rash at the top of my forehead but over the next 2 years it spread to the entire forehead and the sides of my neck below my ears every time I was overheated by exercise or other activities. I live in sunny San Diego but only moved here in 1999. I spent the earlier part of my life in PA & OH. I have tried metronidazole, tetracycline, and sodium sulfacetamide all to little improvement. The symptoms diminish on their own in 2-3 days if I do not exert myself. Having a job where I am either at a desk or flying to do lectures (3 wks/mo) I only get to exercise the way I would like on the weekends, when I go hiking (always resulting in a breakout).
I am 57, male, and now have been diagnosed with gynecomastia after having persistent pain in my right breast. The Dr. took me off omeprazole as a possible cause. Of course, my extreme heartburn has returned after only a week. But I did note something strange - this weekend I went hiking and as a result had a very diminished breakout of rosacea. So, I decided to do some research online on possible connections between omeprazole and rosacea and discovered both this web site and some information possibly linking h.pylori to rosacea.
Other bits of history that maybe some of you might be able to help me with as far as other rosacea connections - my mother's mother and one of her brothers died of stomach cancer. The brother had also been diagnosed with h.pylori. I and my brother both have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was treated with radium seed implants and appear to be cured. Treatment was in 2006. All my life I have suffered with allergies - mostly respiratory, until I moved to San Diego. Several food allergies, molds, dust and pollens. Today I rarely have to take antihistamines, but in OH I lived on them, plus antibiotics for sinusitis - resulting in my being allergic to most antibiotics today. I began to have stomach trouble in my early 30s, which mysteriously went away after drinking aloe vera juice for about a month. Then in my mid-40s I was diagnosed with reflux, as noted above, then again when I was 50 (after a trip to Cabo San Lucas). No doctor has seriously considered I might have h.pylori problems, so I've never been treated for it. BTW, I have an allergic reaction to all sunscreens I've tried.
My dad had rosacea-like breakouts on his inner thighs of his legs as a young man, and I did as well (all over my legs above the knee), and so did my son, after exertion/exercise. We used to call this a "heat rash". They went away with age in all of us. But mine has returned on my forehead, now that I'm in my 50s.
I will be doing some more research and sharing with both my family dr and dermatologist as I learn and try some of the suggestions I am finding here.
