    Default Rosacea gone: Diet

I have been diagnosed with rosacea by two different dermatologists. Both have prescribed me gel and one an antibiotic. However, the thing that works like magic is cutting out dairy and fried foods. It only takes one day for my face to blotch up after eating those foods. But when I cut them out again, poof, the rosacea is gone. Has anyone else experienced this? Is diet really the answer?

I too have noticed how fried foods is a trigger for me. A couple of home made french-fries is okey sometimes, but not often at all.

Havenīt tried going dairy-free though...maybe something to try?

I do not think we should underestimate the role that diet almost certainly plays in the pathogenesis of this disease. Plenty of research points to an association between rosacea and small bowel bacterial overgrowth, helicobacter pylori, and vasoactive gut peptides. There is good research linking diet to overall inflammation, as well, and dairy is a consistent culprit, as are refined sugars, trans fats, and omega 6 fatty acids.

I personally do not buy rosacea as a *primarily* vascular disorder. If it were, I think we would see more coexistent (or global) vascular conditions in rosaceans. However, to my knowledge, there is no greater incidence of vasculitides, vasospasm, or unregulated vasodilation anywhere else in the rosacean's body. It is abnormal blood flow to the face, an exaggeration of the normal flush response, something that particular foods can heighten even in normal people (i.e. MSG flushing).

Keep going, Jenny. I think you're on the right track!

I think there is a higher incidence of coexisting vascular diseases in some rosaceans. I do not have statistics but based on members here some of us have other vascular diseases such as Raynaud's disease.

I do not discount the role diet plays for some people but nor do I underestimate the vascular aspect that is sure to be involved for some rosaceans as well. I would not be surprised to find multifactorial causes in the pathogenesis of this disease contributing to the unique characteristics each rosacean displays. Also explaining the difference in reaction many of us have in response to different treatments.

I am glad you are finding relief with dietary changes Jenny. Please keep us posted on how it goes. A food diary may be of some help in pinpointing other dietary factors for you.

    Best wishes,
    Melissa

    Hi Jenny
If diet seems related to your symptoms, you might want to try a food diary. If it turns out that high histamine foods make you flush, you might consider a low histamine diet and a supplement called Histame, which helps the body deal with histamine. It has made a lot of difference for me.

Certain food may trigger your rosacea, but then the redness goes back to normal. We all have different eating habits, some eat only vegetables, fruits... others eat red meat, pasta, pizza... yet we all have rosacea. So diet, as well as when dealing with acne, shouldn't be a major issue regarding rosacea. Just try to avoid the food you find that triggers your rosacea. I avoid coffee, spicy food, if something's very hot, I wait for it to cool down a bit...

I found that cutting out certain foods is paramount to success. Fods to avoid: spicy, dairy, sugar, cigarettes (really bad), chocolate , alcohol canned fish, salt are a few I can think of now. Drink lots of water between meals, water is so important to keep redness at bay. Once you get into the habit of drinking water all the time it becomes second nature. No sunlight whatsoever and avoid central heating if possible. Never use a wet razor on ones face, use a good quality electric razor. This has helped me and I hope it helps others as well
