email notifications gone awry

I signed up last week and checked the email address I registered with after a few days layoff to find 600 emails from this site, all with replies to various topics..........I did have a setting in my profile to email a notification of replies to topics I posted in, is this why? The setting is useless and beyond annoying.

Normally if you decide to have e-mail notifications sent to you, you will receive one e-mail about the topic until you go in and read the new post(s) that have been made. 600 e-mails sounds like something has gone seriously wrong! Unless you clicked on a heap of topics and asked to be notified of a reply?

Is this still happening?
