View Full Version : Profanity?

I thought it might be beneficial to ask all of the members of this Forum if profanity should be allowed to stay in a post or not.

As I understand it, there are two main ways that profanity can be used:

1. In everyday language/use eg. 'Rosacea is so bloody annoying!'
2. Of an attacking nature/style eg. 'You're a bloody idiot!'

Now, I have used a relatively tame swear word in the examples above. As a child, I thought my Mum was swearing when she told me about "The Bloody Tower of London"!

I think we should remember that this is a public forum and that it can be read by any person, not to mention our younger members.

So, please indicate your preference in the Poll I have added to this post.

Feedback is welcome in follow on posts.

From the responses to this Poll, it will indicate how members feel Admin/Mods should deal with this situation.

Thanks!

Jen

Jen, as my old nan used to say: 'Profanity, it's a c***'s game.'

The answer is clear. Female members should not be admitted to swear since it is unbecoming and unlady-like.

Male members should be allowed to swear.
:D

But there is a difficulty here: what constitutes a swear word?

I feel we most take a poll on the permissibility of each and every word likely to cause offense.

I like the word arse, so would request it is omitted from any future profanity filter.

As long as I can say bollocks, then Im 100% on board. 'F's and 'C's are probably best left at the door though.

Jen,

Would I be breaking any rules if I called RHC a knob jockey?

In a friendly, bantery kind of way, ofcourse.

Mine is not to judge on high
Mine is but to cringe and sigh!

Now if you don't cut it out, I'll have to jump out of the screen and rip your bl**dy arms off! (Aunty Jack)

Seriously though, I really want to know what people think about this, because there has been a lot of swearing of late and everyone has their own threshold for what they condsider to be appropriate or inappropriate use of swearing, if at all.

Now, being the lady that I am (*cough* *splutter* *groan*), I do endeavour to avoid profanity unless it is done tongue in cheek, in the mildest form. One should also remember that ladies glow and men sweat!

Thank god I'm no longer moderating. :D

I find limitations of idea expressions to be a failure of social interaction....

But I must respect those that are here for straight-up advice and information exchange. :0

You're asking for black to define gray and where they can meet without diplomatic discord...all the best.

I'm very tired of limiting myself in what I can and can't say, but that's my nature, and what I've studied. That sort of approach to things will only make people angry and hurt, sooner or later, when they're just here to try and help themselves.

I applaud your diplomacy, mods. :)

I appreciate your point of view David but surely there is a time and a place for everything?!

For example, I did parent help the other day at my son's school. The children greeted me with "Good morning Jenny". Would it have been appropriate for me to reply with "Good morning you little f#*%ers"?

The reason I wanted to know what everyone felt about this issue is because I find it really difficult to know what to do about it, as far as moderating goes.

One could argue that unless the Report Post button is used, nothing should be done. But on the other hand, there are Posting Guidelines that have been put in place. I suppose they are simply Guidelines and not hard and fast rules though.

Anyway, the question is out there for eveyone to have their say about it and I hope more people do have their say.

P.S. Sylvia. Shrek says "Better out than in, ey!"

No, that wouldn't be appropriate in that context. You're an authority figure and it is school and the children are--what--6? You should know better than to talk nasty to small children. ;)

What I'm saying is that most everyone that posts here is an adult. If you're posting to abuse someone, and using abusive language, it shouldn't matter what words you use--the intent will be understood.

I'm guessing most of the people here don't have a sailor's mouth, or at least they check that vocabulary when they post here.

"Cursing" isn't a problem; abusive tone and intent is a problem.

At least, that's my take.

And, yes, we can debate the divide between "conviction" and "abusive" on another forum. :)

i adopt the same mindset on here as i do IRL.

You call me a twat and i have been known to stop the car, get out and confront the person in question. i really seem to have little threshold for aggressive name calling.

However if you want to call an object a swear word, curse a life circumstance or deem the whole world utter bastards, i have no problem with it.

Id say no profanity. I really dont think its appropriate in this type of forum. I am one to curse...I just dont think it is necessary here.

I'm new but I'm going to jump in head first anyway. My opinion/hope/pipe dream:

This should be a family-friendly site, with strict enforcement of polite decorum and respect. No profanity.

With structure in place boundaries establish. I like boundaries. I've been going through the threads to learn the site, find information and get to know the people that participate in the Rosacea discussion. I am shocked at the tone of some of the posts. I get enough of that abuse in the 'real' world. I want to come to a place where I can be surrounded by fellow Rosies and feel the support and encouragement that is sadly lacking elsewhere.

I like my Rose-coloured glasses.
Peace. Love. Hope.
And clear skin, please.

Sincerely,
Twickle Purple

Thanks for your input TP.

There are "boundaries", called Forum Policies. Within the Forum Policies, there are posting guidlines. You'll find a link to these in the Sticky Post at the top of the Newbies area.

If a post is reported, using the "Report Post" button, the Mods then take action. This is the system in place.

Honestly though, this is now a much happier place to 'reside' than it was in the past. Long story and not worth dragging up.
