Variations of Rosacea — Rosacea Fulminans: The Most Extreme Rosacea Disease Variation

This variation is possibly the most extreme form of Rosacea.
Rosacea Fulminans only occurs in women.
It is characterized by its very rapid onset, often reaching the peak of severity within only days to weeks.
Lesions form in the appearance of giant abscesses and multiple lesions and the resulting disfigurement is hideous.
Even though Rosacea Fulminans is so disfiguring and debilitating, the prognosis is excellent.
Typically the disease is treated with Accutane and steroids.
Once Rosacea Fulminans is under control, it does not recur.

Why do you have to scare us to death, Brady? At least there was no picture of rosacea fulminans on that weird website. The website recommends acid peels for rosacea skin and describes acne sufferers as
"psychoneurotic; having sexual difficulties; exhibiting poor control, impulsiveness and infantile behaviour." Well, DUH! Most acne patients are teen-agers!

Do I get a prize for passing the 500 posts mark?

There are a lot of people who would like to have Accutane banned:

I can't imagine what women with rosacea fulminans would do if it is banned.

Irishgenes,
Yes, you get a prize: honorable mention. I didn't feel like going through all the members to see what place you are in number of posts, but Dr. Nase is way ahead of everyone.

I have been doing a lot of research on PubMed and there really isn't any good description of Rosacea Fulminans and I was just wondering what it was and a Google search brought up that web site with a horrible description of the disease and I thank God I am a man. (just being funny, so don't get testy). I then ran into Sex Hormonal Therapy (SH) which I hadn't heard about and wrote an editorial on it at this url >

http://www.rosaceans.com/html/sh.html

And the weird thing about Rosacea Fulminans is that one report says it is treated with Corticosteroids and isotretinoin. Go figure? See this url >

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15491439&query_hl=3

That led me to research steroids and rosacea which caused me to re-write my editorial on this subject >

http://www.rosaceans.com/html/steroids.html

Not to mention re-writing my editorial on demodex >

http://www.rosaceans.com/html/demodex.html

So I have been busy and not trying to scare anyone, just reading, writing, and research.

While cortisone is harmful to rosacea, the sex steroids should not all be lumped together as harmful. I believe only the progestins that have a testosterone effect are harmful. Also, even the natural progesterone that women make in their bodies is a cause of acne (and possibly a trigger for rosacea) in some women. My face would always become greasy and pimply right after ovulation, clearing up after my periods. I'm post-menopausal now, and I recently started on a new Prochieve natural progesterone gel for the dreaded progesterone phase of my hormone replacement therapy. I hate progesterone so much that I only do this every 90 days. I have had a non-stop migraine and have been flushing nearly all the time.

But pure estrogen is a lovely hormone! Since so many women develop rosacea only after menopause, I believe it is very useful for rosacea (but not that horse estrogen called Premarin--only natural human bioidentical estradiol and estrone and estriol). It will certainly prevent the hormonal flushing trigger, if not other rosacea triggers.

My wife uses the natural progesterone and estrogen made by a compounding pharmacist which has helped her as well, but she has absolutely a clear complexion and no skin problems. I agree that the natural ones are better than the pharmaceutical companies' prescription forumulas. She was on Premarin for years unopposed which was not a good idea and paid for that one. The natural is by far better. I just found those research papers on treating rosacea with SH therapy interesting and never heard of using it for rosacea before. Thanks for your thoughts.
