Visceral fat increases inflammatory cytokines:

Relationship of obesity and visceral adiposity with serum concentrations of CRP, TNF-alpha and IL-6.

OBJECTIVE:: To investigate the relationship between serum concentrations of the cytokines C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and interleukin (IL)-6, and obesity and visceral adiposity. METHODS:: A cross-sectional study of 100 Korean adults free from pre-existing inflammatory disease or cancer was performed. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and serum concentrations of CRP, TNF-alpha and IL-6 were measured. In 46 obese subjects, fat mass was assessed by bioimpedance analysis and abdominal fat distribution was determined by computerized tomography scan. RESULTS:: Overall, serum concentrations of CRP, TNF-alpha and IL-6 were significantly correlated with weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist-hip ratio. In obese subjects, CRP and IL-6 were significantly correlated with BMI, waist circumference and visceral adipose tissue. Multiple regression analysis showed that CRP was significantly associated with BMI, whereas IL-6 was significantly related with visceral adiposity in obese subjects. CONCLUSIONS:: The positive associations of obesity and visceral adiposity with elevated cytokine levels suggest the importance of reducing obesity and visceral adiposity to prevent elevations in cytokine levels.

CONCLUSION: If your tummy is a little bit too big (like "popping out"), you should get on a diet. In general, if you got a lot of fat on your body, you should get on a diet.

This visceral fat is dangerous. When you get a lot of it, your in a vicious cycle. The visceral fat increases inflammatory cytokines, cortisol and a lot of bad stuff. And all this bad stuff increases the visceral fat again. So, not only because of your rosacea, but also for your health, get on a diet if you are a bit too fat.

Hi all,
Is there a correlation between the inflammatory cytokines (eg TNFa) and rosacea? Would the typical rosacea sufferer have an elevated CRP?
I know plenty who are bone skinny that have rosacea (have a twin brother who is a die hard bodybuilder - 2% body fat - with facial skin worse than mine)....Hmmm....
Regards,
Perry

I don't know if there is a correlation between TNFa and rosacea. But about your twin brother, when he gets that ripped (actually, if he gets under 2% bodyfat, he will die) the body think it's war (^^) and will do anything to prevent it self from starving. All the "good" hormones will drop, and all the "bad" hormones will increase. These bad hormones, like cortisol, often got inflammatory actions. So when it comes to rosacea, I don't think it's good to be too skinny or too fat, somewhere in the middle.

I don't want to accuse your brother in any way, but if he uses drugs like AAS, it sure want make the skin any better, only worse.

I don't think 2% body fat is really possible, probably if he's very lean around 5%.

You mentioned your brother is a weightlifter...does he also have rosacea? Weight training certainly seems to be a substantial trigger for myself.

Hey guys,
I guess I was over-generalizing (one word or two?) This is beside the point, but my brother never has had his body mass index (BMI) checked (to my knowledge)...He just looks it. I would guess his BMI probably is about 7 percent or so. I base my guestimate on being involved with bodybuilding myself back in the 80's, where the avg. ripped, contest-ready bodybuilder was said to have the body fat percentage of around 3 percent. This, of course, would not kill you quickly...what would happen is that your body, needing nutrients, would start to catabolize muscle tissue for energy. This is precisely why many chose the anabolic steroid route (not the same as corticosteroids) not only to get big, but also ripped WHILE big. Most could not get the desired "cuts", without losing much muscle mass.
Now to rosacea. Are rosacea and obesity linked? At this point, who knows for sure. But I dont THINK there are any studies out there to suggest they are (I dont think anyone has even hypothesized this) and the anabolic and catabolic pathways and their corresponding enzymes that either cause the storage or breakdown of fat to suite the body are not linked to rosacea, to my knowledge. Have you guys noticed a higher than avg no. of obese folks with rosacea? I haven't.
I you guys see anything, please post it, as I will, too, with an apololgy for being so hardheaded.
