Group,
I cannot tell you much due to disclosure laws, but I received an excellent grant on topical dapsone for rosacea papules, pustules, redness AND concomittant treatment of acne and pore problems such as folliculitis and keratin plugs.
Excellent for rosacea especially that they are specifically making a rosacea friendly cream with a 3% to 5% dapsone concentration.
This may also be the first true treatment that rosacea sufferers with coexisting acne or pore problems can safely use. We shall see, but all evidence points to yes.

That's great news. Sounds like they're actually looking into the Rosacea market.
I tried checking around the web for research on topical dapsone, but came up a little short... any info on new studies with topical dapsone? I'm a bit scared that it'll be an all hype/marketing thing like Differin is for Acne.

Ian,
This is actually one of the Grants that I reviewed and accepted as the MAC Chair for the RRF.
The Grant includes preliminary data that strongly indicate this may be the first true rosacea medication for papules, pustules and facial redness that also treats facial acne in a gentle, but effective fashion.
They also understand the need for a non-irritating base for rosacea sufferers so they specifically made a 3% and 5% dapsone formulation in an elegant, non-irritating base. For people without rosacea, they have formulated dapsone in a more penetrating (but harsh) base. This shows that they understand and respect our skin, nerves and blood vessel requirements.
Treating rosacea with coexisting acne topically has almost been impossible. This will give us an excellent alternative -- nothing even close to differin and other irritating products.

Congrats about the grant for the dapsone cream!
Which makes me wonder: Any clinical trials going on lately? I looked in clinical trials for the NLM, and there doesn't seem to be much as far as study going on about rosacea. It's maddening, isn't it, so many people have our disorder. I'd even relocate temporarily just to be a part of a study.

What does a non-irritating base for rosacea/acne sufferers consist of? I need to get a medication compounded for my skin, but don't know what chemicals to tell the pharmacist to use. I get pimples with any cream I put on my skin, even when it is supposedly for acne or rosacea

Ditto for me! Let me know if you need any guinea pigs. I have difuse redness, not too many P&P's if I stay out of the sun.

This medicine is a sulfone antibiotic used to treat leprosy, dermatitis herpetiformis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor, such as rosacea.
"Dapsone has a pharmacological double function as both an antibiotic and an antiphlogistic drug. The value of dapsone in granulomatous rosacea should be established by a controlled study."
