Hello all,

What's the best med/otc product for neural burning in the face?

Thanks,

Hi
I would have to recommend Cymbalta. It is not an otc product, however. It is actually an antidepressant but is supposed to help with neural burning. I can vouch for that - I have been on it a short time and already noticed the burning is more a sensation of warmth instead of the intense burning I used to have. However, I don't look any less red, just feel less on fire. Dr. Nase has written on Cymbalta before and I believe it is also used for diabetics with neuropathic pain.

The burning is one of the worst features for me, is this something that can be taken with antibiotics e.t.c

Hello cactus. Curious, what dosage are you taking and how long have you been taking it before "feeling" an effect?

Best wishes,

Adrian.

Me again.... :) This is what dr.Nase posted about it on the RS board. I hope he doesn't mind being quoted:

Hello Tammy,

Good question. I like your Neurologist. Cymbalta is very good for
Neuropathy that causes burning symptoms -- like diabetes and facial
rosacea. It is classified as an antidepressant, but is the first
one to receive FDA approval for indication in the treatment of
neuropathic syndromes. Seems to be much more effective than
elavil. It was actually made by Eli Lilly who is just across the
street from our medical center. We have a ton of diabetics on the
drug and they never report hot flashes (potential 2% side effect).
Give it a try, but dont expect anything until you have titrated up
to 60 mgs.
Keep us posted on its actions and side effects.
Regards,
Hello Group,

For the six or seven of you that started Cymbalta, please keep the
group and/or me informed of your progress. Do not expect anything
substantial for at least 60 to 90 days as it takes this long to
affect the CNS and peripheral nerves. This is the first ever drug
FDA approved to treat neuropathic burning.

The recommended dose is 30 mgs twice a day. However, pain doctors
have had increased success going up to 90 to 120 mgs per day.

Regards,

Geoffrey
