Hi, I was wondering if some of the more knowlegeable members in the area of neutraceuticals, herbals, and other supplements could post your knowledge about some brands we often see when browsing the vitamin isles/websites?
I have always wondered which are the "best" brands, or, the brands that can be trusted to contain what they claim to contain at the listed level on the bottle.
There are so many brands out there...
I don't know, we could have this thread go on for a bit and then perhaps add it as a FAQ entry or something.
Just an idea.

David, I find this on-line and/or paper catalogue a good source:
www.swansonvitamins.com
They have their own brands of a lot of stuff that they sell for a fraction of the price of shops.

There is a website which actually tests the brands of OTC supplements to see if they are pure and contain what the label says. http://www.consumerlabs.com/
You can see part of their reports free on their website. To see the whole report with all of the brands, you have to get a $24 a year subscription. I got one, as I spend a lot of supplements and figured it would be worth it if it saved me from buying a brand that didn't have what it claimed. However, contrary to my expectations, very few supplements are actually fakes. I had worried a lot about buying the NOW brand since it is cheaper than the other brands at my health food store, but at least with the items I have checked, it is just as good as the other brands.
I think most of what you hear about fake supplements is propaganda put out by the government to get us ready for their CODEX ban on all OTC supplements. They've been telling us for a long time that prescription drugs from Canada are dangerous, which is a lie.

Hi Irishgenes,
Did you ever check on WalMart brands? Last night I was reading in some health article or other that WalMart brands tested high in potency which is opposite of what I've read in the past. What's your opinion?
Thanks!

Yes, I checked on the Wal-Mart "Spring Valley" brand for some of the supplements I take, like saw palmetto extract. It contained what the label said. If you have any particular supplement you want to know about, I can check to see if it has been tested and if it passed.

Hi. Firstly, I like your comment on Dr. Nase's left. Secondly, Would you please check if Jarrow Formulas and Twin Lab are trustworthy brands at your convenience?
Thanks very much for taking your time. Have a great weekend.
Adam
"It is just a fact that Dr. Nase knows more about rosacea than all the rest of us put together. As my Irish grandmother used to tell me, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." In other words, don't be critical or suspicious or ungrateful when you have received something valuable for free. When the giver sees that his gift is unappreciated, he will most likely stop giving. You saw what happened to the Yahoo group when Dr. Nase left. The posts dwindled down and few were of any use."

Consumer Labs rates each product individually; they don't just give a pass to all of a particular manufacturer's products. I checked Borage GLA 125 by Jarrow Formulas and Alpha Lipoic Acid by Twin Labs, and both passed. If you want to know a specific supplement, I would be happy to check.

Thank you very much for your help!
I am taking Twin Lab Daily Two Caps (without iron) and I like it. They are GMP manufacturer. Would you check it for me?

They didn't test that particular multi-vitamin, but they tested Twin Daily One and it passed. Two that failed for having too much lead are Theragran-M Advanced Formula Hi-Potency Multi and L'il Critters Gummy Vites (for kids, obviously!)

Thank you very much irishgenes for taking your time to check it for me! Daily Two should be fine since Daily One passed.
Best,
Adam

Hmm... I guess we are all looking for the "ultimate" vitamin pill :) So.. Is there a supplement containing zinc, copper, ester-c etc? Less pills are better :)
