Hey all.

When I drink Alcohol, I allways end up with bad skin the next morning. The skin is more red, sebum production seems to have speeded up and I get p/p.

I think that this is pretty normal for us with rosacea or seb derm.

But does anyone know why we actually react this way?

And maybe a treatment for it?

After three swallows of beer and my cheeks turn bright red and there are swollen for two-three hours. I turn bright red (all my face is swollen and purple) for two hours or more when I drink other kind of alcohol( rum, whiskey, vodka ).
I think beer is not good at all for me because my cheeks are terribly painful and red. Thus, my rosacea will get worse because of that.

I read that our reaction is due to an enzyme that our body can"t break the alcohol down.
Some people found to take zantac(no prescription needed in Australia) or pepcid AC (no prescription needed in Canada) might help to prevent these side effects.
Google "Asian flush" and click echeng.org(don't remember exactly!!) there are some interesting stuff about alcohol and reaction.hi:

Well maybe the general rule for rosaceans that will explain everything is----

If it feels/tastes good chances are it will not be good for your rosacea

this would explain wine, beer, alcohol
enjoying a day in the sun , like normal people
eating a nice piece of chocolate cake
drinking hot coffee or hot chocolate or hot tea
having a yummy thai dinner

You get the picture......somebody is punishing us for something or we just do not see the big picture and it is not actually malevolent.

Seriously though alcohol dilates blood vessels just as matt said and red wine also contains chemicals called tyramines - a histamine-like compound that dilates vessels even more.

Also, another reason some people flush when drinking alcohol is that alcohol remains in the bloodstream until metabolised by liver enzymes. Two enzymes are mainly responsible for this. One of the enzymes converts alcohol into acetaldehyde — and that’s what causes facial flushing. The 2nd enzyme breaks down the acetaldehyde. An enzyme imbalance causes excessive acetaldehyde build-up and facial flushing.

Best wishes,
Melissa

Alcohol are toxins in your body. Your body creates a reaction (red face) to get rid of the toxins.

I think whatever you've experienced to be bad for rosacea is bad for rosacea.

chocolate is fine for me, as is sun (though of course I wear SPF).
