View Full Version : My first v-beam experience

On Friday I had my first laser treatment. I have had rosacea for 4 years. Recently, after a thyroidectomy, my rosacea flared up. I have been getting intense burning and flushing, along with P&P's. Two derms suggested laser would be an excellent choice for me and given my olive toned skin, v-beam would be the way to go.

The derm decided that a sub-bruising (just below) would be the way to go. Enough to make you look very sun burned, but not bruised was how he put it.

I was surprised by how quickly the treatment was over. But I will be honest a bit shocked by how much it hurt...hated the burning feeling.

He did a test patch, which resulted in immediate swelling. I think he then turned it down just a touch because the side where the test patch was has swollen worse than the other (or could just be my strange face LOL).

Anyway after we had finished I applied my home made licorice serum and started applying ice. In approx 2 hrs time the redness had subsided a lot, so much so I could even walk through the supermarket. I thought my DH might has exaggerated by saying he couldn't tell I had just had laser, but nobody stared at me smile:

By that evening the swelling started to even out and turn me in to a chipmunk LOL. By the next morning I was pretty swollen. I have kept applying ice and this afternoon (Sunday) I can really feel my face coming back down. I keep applying the ice and the licorice serum. Oddly I have taken showers (haha that's not the odd bit )and my face is less red after them. Surely the laser couldn't work that quickly? The derm said about 4 weeks till I see the real results.

Anyway I will keep an update of my progress FYI. I guess the real evidence will be to compare the photo the derm took on Friday against my face when I go back at the end of Jan.

Hey that is good newsyes: everything you experienced sounds normal. May I ask where you went as the derm sounds very sensible.

Hi Valby,

That is good news. I remain red and swollen (like that chipmunk you mentioned LOL) for a number of days yes: I might have to look into this homemade licorice serum you are using.

Good luck with continued speedy healing and happy holidays hi:

yes...what is this licorice serum you speak of?? I know licorice is a powerful anti-inflammatory. How do you make it? And where did you leanr how to make it?

Also did you get your whole face treated??

Hope it all works out well for you :)

Hi guys! My derm is in Sydney, Dr. Richards. The serum i posted about in the topicals section. I buy the licorice extract from skinactives.com but you can buy from other places online, like gardenofwisdom. I decided to try it because some other rosacea sufferers on the forum at skinactives had great success with the licorice. I love that I can make it myself because as you know topicals and rosacea often equals disaster!

I only got my cheeks, nose and chin done with the laser. The cheeks were really from the nose to the cheek bone, but next time I will ask to get it done right to the edge because I do sometimes flush over the whole area. Basically the derm put on those glasses they have an did the areas where I had the broken caps.

Swelling looking better today and redness quite good. I could slap on some makeup and leave the house. Still its very warm and sunny here today so I am hiding out inside out of the sun. One thing that worries me is that me and sunscreen don't mix. I can get away with an SPF15 but anything with more zinc or titanium dioxide and I get clogged pores and acne. I think i will stick to the SPF15 and hats, hats, hats!

Hi Valby,

Sounds like things are progressing nicely with your v-beam treatment. I wish you all the best.

The name Dr Richards sounds familiar to me. Is he the derm in Bondi Junction?
If not, are you able to say where he is located?

Thanks.

Hi Mistica,
He is at Westmead. PM me if you want contact details.

Doing well today. I am beginning to wonder whether I needed a higher setting? Redness is pretty much back to normal. I am slightly puffy on one side but not noticeably. How long does it normally take for you to tell any effect on blood vessels? There is a prominent one on my nose that is much less noticeable but can't tell what difference has been made over my cheeks etc....

Ooh also ordered an Elixa red LED last night. Very excited!! They have great customer service and reasonable shipping rates to Oz laugh:
