I know this is the main active ingredient in metrocream/gel so my question is if they beieve it to help rosacea topically why isn't it used as an oral antibiotic to treat rosacea?? Anyone ever take this?

Actually, here in the Netherlands it IS used for rosacea. My doctor wanted me to take them but they have strong side effects, as well as a black box warning, so I refused to take them. That is probably why they aren't prescribed that often.

Oral metronidazole is in fact standard therapy for rosacea (and acne vulgaris) in Europe and has been for years. As I understand it though the initial dosage is quite high 1000 mg and at that dosage there is a minute chance of liver damage. Compared with the dangers of other anti-biotics that doctors give out like candy here in North Amercia though (hello phototoxicity from doxy or how about tunring blue from minocycline) it would seem that it just never became popular here (my guess is that the amnufacturer failed to give enough free samples and other gifts to derms to push it). I actually tried oral metro and had a very uncommon side effect of really bad heartburn that wouldn't go away until I stopped, but otherwise it was fine. They sell oral metro in extended release capsules as well making once a day dosing possible. It also does not tend to cause yeast infections like the tetracycline and macrolides can. So there are some benefits.
If you have Rosacea and want to try it because your face is to sensitive to use a topical, suggest it to your doctor and give it a try, in a few studies it was found to be as effective as doxy/tetracyline.

Very interesting.....I have some on hand....my doggie was on the stuff for an infection....she took it 2x per day for 5-7days and then another antibotic amocillin also for 10days...she had parasites!! Anyway the vet told me that metro oral has amazing anti-inflammatory effects....you see my doggie was gushing blood from her bottom from these awful parasites and the vet said this metro will not only take care of the parasites but within a day or 2 at most the inflammation would go down and she would stop bleeding. I tell you it cleared her up ASAP and she was her old self in a 2 days....that got me thinking so I went on line and got a large bottle of 250mg per tab for dirt cheap ($15) but it's classified for treating your fish tank....many breeders know about this stuff and they buy it to treat their dogs several times per year just to make sure they don't get these parasite problems. I thought I should re-treat my doggie so I ordered it and it is EXACTLY the same thing the vet had given me just like the breeders said. I am thinking if my doggie can take it then maybe I can too....I am still considering it....I have had so many bad reactions to many antibiotics so maybe this one would help...and it's very cheap and easy to get.

Be careful if you try the(oral metrondazole) flagyl. From my understanding the stuff is strong and can knock you to your knees. And make sure you supplement with a probiotic because if anything can give you a yeast infection this will.

I haven't tried it yet....not sure if I will....but my doggie did so well on it that it is very tempting....wasn't this one of the antibiotics that Dan (I think that's his name) that cured his rosacea with....I know he did many other things but I think somewhere along the way he used this for a season along with all those other meds and stuff. I don't think it will cure me just maybe clear up my skin abit but I sure don't want other problems going on!
One other thing my hubby took this too with amoxcillin just a few weeks after our doggie got so sick...he had to as he had inflammatory bowel and intestines from something bad he ate in another country....he was pretty sick as he never runs out to the doc like that....anyway he said he didn't experience any awful side effects from it just started feeling better by day 3 or 4. Still he is not one to react to much of anything unlike me!
