I've been considering getting a tattoo for a few years now and wonder if anyone had any advice about where I could go about finding a really good artist.

Got one about a mile down the road from me - not that I've ever been tempted.
There appear to be about 100 in the UK who are on Yell.com. Have no idea how reputable they are but you could search on:
http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?keywords=tatooists&location=&broaderLocation=&scrambleSeed=70784614&companyName=&startAt=&mqs=&targetName=&M=1&T=1&clarifyIndex=&clarifyOptions=&filterKeywords=&searchType=advance&startOoaAt=&ooa=&ssm=
Good luck

Hi Sarah,
It's none of my business and I hope I'm not offending you (or anyone else) but my opinion on this is to be very careful.
Tatooing is invasive and our bodies react in such a hyperextreme way pertaining to other external/internal factors that I would be concerned with a possible bad reaction.
Also, on a purely personal level what we like now we may not in a few years from now. And while changing hair color, accessories and other stuff is easy removing and/or changing tatooes are difficult and expensive.
I'm really sorry if I'm overstepping and so do not want to offend you. I think you're super and just a wonderful person.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
All the best,
Melissa

Dont worry I'm not offended. I've been wanting one done since I was a teenager and its never really gone away. Its hard to explain but for me its the idea of owning my body and marking it with something that I want instead of something I have no control over.
Anyway I could only get one that wouldn't be visible to anyone ie middle of back and I'm only going to get one if I know that there really good artists.

I researched tattoos for years before I got one. Didn't have any negative reaction to it, though I almost passed out while it was being done, it HURTS! I dont care what any tough guy biker say, it HURTS! My embarassment was lessoned when the guy doing the tatooo said he has a 250lb biker guy that comes in to get them all the time, and each time he almost faints. Its the breathing, it hurts so you kind of unonciously hold your breath, so just remember to breath. The outline is the most painful part, and depending on how detailed a tat your getting the shading can be kind of rough, they are going over the same areas again and and again. Ouchie.
Dont know if you drink, but dont for at least a day before, thins the blood and you will bleed and scab up, no asprin for the same reason. I will also tell you they itch something terrible while they heal, its normal.
I love mine and dont regret it at all. Its a howling wolf with a tribal design around it, on my shoulder. It needs to be recolored though, its a bit faded.
May I ask what you would like to get, and on what part of you you are getting it?
I one day plan to get Snoopy doing his happy dance on my ankle. silly, you betcha, but I have wanted it for years! (ankles are supposed to be one of the most painful ones BTW its all bone, no meat)

My friend went here and was really happy. I'm not sure if the fact that he's done quite a few celebs means that he's good or not.

I totally understand the desire to be able to control something that is happening to our bodies. It gives you a sense of freedom and autonomy.
Good luck and I hope you find a quality artist who will do a great and safe job!
Best wishes,
Melissa
