I have constantly bloodshot eyes. What can get rid of this?

I have no problems with dry, flakey eye lids though.

I want my eyes to look nice and white and healthy again... :(

Hi,

First of all don't use anything that advertises "it gets the red out". Anything that ends in ine like visine because it has a vasoconstricting effect that works for a while and then rebounds. So you end up with redder looking eyes when using these for more than a couple of days.

Try preservative free rewetting drops every hour or 2 whether or not your eyes feel dry. They could be red from allergens and debris and the rewetting drops will flush that stuff out. Make sure the drops are preservative free because preservatives cause irritation and with long term use you want NO preservatives.

You can also try cold compresses over your eyes. The cold will constrict bvs.

Make sure you get enough sleep because chronic deprivation can cause red looking eyes also.

Basically you want to know what's causing the redness though. Why are they always bloodshot? Try these tips and hopefully it'll help you.

Best wishes,
Melissa

thankyou melissa.

I dont know why my eyes are always red with bery visable vessels. I have alot of trouble sleeping, so maybe thats it? I cant get much more than 4 straight hours per night.

I thought it could be ocular rosacea?

Also I bought some clear eyes to help eliviate it. They are vasoconstricting the box says. I thought that was good? Arent they developing a topical vasoconstrictot for the face to reduce redness when flushing?

The problem with vasoconstrictors is that after a while of usage your blood vessels become desensitized to the vasoconstricting effect and then you get a rebound dilation. Which makes your eyes redder.

So it's much preferable to use preserv-free rewetting drops like refresh plus.

As for what they're working on for rosacea (facial ), I think one of the problems the scientists are trying to overcome is rebound redness. So it does affect the bvs of the face also.

I recommend Thera Tears which can be pruchased at any major drugstore. I first was recommended this product from Dr. Nase's Book (http://www.drnase.com/purchase_book.htm)

Once tried, I never went back to anything else. They say they turn into water on contact. No preseratives or anything else that might be too harsh for someone who suffers from ocular Rosacea.[/url]

Hi DJC,

I have the same problem - red visible vessels in my eyes. but it's not all the time, i do see a connection between the redness and lack of sleep.
my eyes are occasionally very itchy too.
I went to see my ophthalmologist for this and he said that the eyes might be irritated because i don't sleep enough, work on a computer all day (unfortunately I can't avoid it... it's my job...) in an air-conditioned room which creates very dry air.
he said that he believes the blood vessels and itching have nothing to do with rosacea (i also don't any problems with my eye lids or the eye area),
it's just a case of rather delicate eyes which are easily affected by dryness and lack of sleep.
He recommended not to use any type of eye drops since it might be too 'aggressive' for me, just wash them with water in case they itch.
I have noticed that my eyes are perfectly fine during the weekend (no computer and no strong a/c), so i guess he was right.

Yael.

Hi,

I learned this a long time ago in school. I guess I did absorb some knowledge

I use Clear Eyes on special ocassions, on those days when my eyes really gets red on purpose ;) Anyway, Clear Eyes works great for me for ocassional use. I've used it like three days in a row too and i don't get any rebound problems. But i figure it can't be good to use it on a daily basis all the time...

I don't think 3 days in a row can cause any problems. I mean long term use like every day for weeks.
