Since I started on this forum, I have been curious as to the screen names people choose. I understand why some folks choose not to use their real names, but what do the screen names mean? Are there any stories behind them?
I used to live in Windsor, England when instant messaging was just getting popular. It was my screen name to chat with friends and family back home and it just stuck!

When I joined the support group and the forum computers were brand new to me. So I didn't think about making up an original name. I was just trying to learn computer stuff as quickly as I could!LOL

I have been thinking exactly the same thing.
Mine sort of came from my partner. When I joined the Yahoo Support Group I had to think of a name. My boyfriend and I were sort of mucking about thinking of funny ones and this is one he said he had been thinking of for his band (the 29 bit is my house number). Any way it made me laugh and so it got choosen :D

My user name is actually the name of the sweet dog in my avatar.
Moka was the dog i grew up with. She died a year and a half ago and i miss her very much.
I frequently use this name in forums with her picture as the avatar and this way every time i post a message it reminds me of her . :)

My name comes from the Moomins, the finnish books, and later the TV series.
I've always been a bit of a moomins fan... in fact I'm taking the kids to moominland in Finland this summer.

Mmm...well I'm in Australia (Oz) and my face was red and hot when I joined the Forum. I spent a lot of time reading old posts when I first joined and maybe the 'RedHotCanuck' user name stuck in my head, I can't remember now. I promise that I did not intend to steal a similar name of a now ex-Mod!
I was known as "Jen-Bear" (my nik name) on the Yahoo Rosacea Support Group and when I joined the Forum I wanted to be an annonymous person. That soon changed when I joined the RRDi and was invited to be a Mod. So, I am now known by my real name (Jenny Nairn) on the RSG and sign my name as Jen on the Forum. I don't post on the RSG anymore but occassionally check it out. There's some great info over there (our sister site) and some great members. I love that it's pre-approved moderating...so there is far less dramas like there is here in the Forum with post-moderated messages. Sigh!
Anyway, so much for a short reply!

just used this since it was on my mind at the time when i joined... i love the music category and i also create music in it's scene with a combination with other styles in some songs of mine. i also dress a little 80's... the cool 80's aspect mind you!!!

Hey there New Wave Chick
So, can I visualise a young Madonna, with a flouro wrap in your hair, lots of chunky leather jewellery and other bright accessories? The 80's were my era and I did all of that. Short, high hair and loads of 'things' attached to me! Got to love the 80's! I'm sure you're describing the more calm 80's fashion!? Like 'ONJ' disco tights...Grease...John Travolta! Just stirring! Was there ever a cool aspect of the 80's fashion?
Do tell! :D
Luv Jen x
P.S. What sort of music do you write? I'm a muso too.

lol you guys!
think the cure ect. for a band to identify with. i can't wear high heels although i did for punk rock day in the 7th grade. i wore a trash bag for an out fit and borrowed my moms 4 or 5 inch heels that were too big. lol
i have my own style, mind you. i dress however i feel like.
madonna... ugh. she's been a "nightmare" in my life. i love her ect... but we look very much alike and i sometimes got mistaken for her. it's the honest to god truth... her and i must have the same fashion guru spirit guide.
whenever i changed my hair be it color or a cut... within 3 weeks-2 months she did it. so this would look like i'm copying her although most know i didn't.
and sometimes when i performed on stage ( i use to be a dance performer and in a commercial and did shows in the rave scene ect and mostly gay clubs)... gay boys who are obbsessed with madonna would shout "madonna, maddona" to me on stage and stalk me around the clubs...
"you look like madonna!"
my reply back.... no she looks like me!
however.. madonna turned me onto some cool fashion in the 80's yes... fishnet tops and i dig the rubber braclets!
music i write...
i write all kinds.
a lot of dance music... be it industrial, house, new wave...
ahhh... kind of tribal/new age stuff too... and some funcky stuff.
movie music like you'd hear in lord of the rings..orchrastrial (sp) stuff like
and other stuff.
i sound simular to erasure and depeshmode in many songs.
everything is all electric... synths is what i use.
it's just me and my partner... she lives in sweden...waiting for her to get back here so we can finish this album! she sings... writes the lyrics to my songs.
she's well known in sweden and is busy with her solo stuff right now... but back to me soon.
what do you do/play redhotoz?

I was a huge Cure fan! I even went through a "Mod" era...wearing black nail polish, black lip stick, spikey hair (shaved at the side), pointy black shiny shoes...the whole works. LOL What a fun era the 80's were!
Fancy being told you look like Madonna...or that Madonna looks like you! Fancy Madonna stealing your fashion ideas! LOL What a hoot!
I started paying the Cornet when I was about 10. Have also played the Trumpet, Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn, Flute, Guitar, Piano and sadly the good old Recorder at school! LOL I've been around brass bands since the age of 10 but had a stint up north with a little rock band, playing the Trumpet and doing back up vocals. Now...that was fun! We called ourselves "Tropical Blend" as we had such a mix of nationalities in the band. Once guy...actually his name was Guy...used to play guitar with Manhattan Transfer. Kinda cool.
Anyway, best of luck with your album. Sounds like your girlfriend is very talented...you do too! All fantastic stuff!

i currently own a few korgs... work station - triton extreme, ds-8, legacy controller and a handful of soft synths on my laptop... all the korg soft synths and fm7 (which is the yamaha dx7) plus more soft synths.
i pay for it! i don't do illegal rips or else i'd have more... but i have enough sounds for now.
and there's only one piano i connect with... one of my moms. her steinway grand piano. i've written many songs on hers. otherwise i don't care for pianos.

The Triton series are proper keyboards, nice one!
I actually make soundware, thats what my business does. I have some products coming out soon as 'Native Instruments Kompakt' instruments. They're going to be really cool! So excited.
So your mother has a Steinway?
Wow, thats fantastic. I would love to play on such an instrument (even though my chops are not up to doing it justice).
Regarding Korg VST's...
Have you tried their Legacy collection? Very handy plugins. Their Polysix emulation is a really nice synth.

yeah... my mom has 2 pianos and a harpsicord. she use to be a concert pianist and performed with segovia and carlos montoy...to name a couple.
and no... i don't play like her. i only got a few lessons since she was rarely available for me because of all her work... i do my own thing and just create songs.
i'll have to check out some of your work. i am looking to buy something new soon... be it another keyboard or more sounds.

Wow, so your mother must have some serious chops!
I was trained in classical guitar, though I never perform. Infact, a fine lady friend of mine recently bought me a Ramirez... such a beautiful guitar. Iv been playing Tarrega on it constantly for the past few weeks... cant put it down.
Iv been teaching myself piano for the past few years. Right now Im working on a couple of the Chopin Etudes... so difficult, its kicking my arse every which way, lol. But so rewarding. I want to be able to play some of my favorite romantic era works... but Im not kidding myself. The difficult Liszt and Rachmaninov will always be beyond my grasp, sadly.
Yeah, my work is so much fun. Its been a tough few years, but I have a pretty big contract and another one pending, so finally coming together. But the best is that I get to mess around all day, lol. I set up weird home made instruments or go out field recording, etc. Then I get the audio back in the studio and mangle it will various programs.
The last product I did was done using a lot of Csound. If you arent familiar with this one I highly recommend you check it out. Quite literally, its the most powerful resource for electronic muso's... and its free! I was using it mostly for sample granulation. It has an opcode that enables you to do these wonder granular time stretches that work perfectly for long ambient soundscapes. I was using to stretch bowed cymbal recordings and all sorts.
M1 VST is fantastic! Though I found it quite buggy. Never the less, its worth it for that classic choral pad
So you're looking for some more gear? I guess sample libraries are the big thing these days. My work is pretty 'niche', but some of the instruments have phenomenal wide spread appeal. Have you tried those new VSL instruments? They're like the VSL orchestral libraries built into section specific VST instruments. So cool.
Funnily enough Im in the process of selling quite a bit of stuff right now. Iv gotten rid of a lot of hardware lately. Nowadays Im using mostly software, with a small Mackie desk for input and monitoring. I have a bigger desk, but its mostly for show.
I dont know if you get up to much sampling, but if so, you have to check out this little gizmo that I got the other day. Its called the Microtrack, by M-audio. Literally, its like a complete field rig in a palm top unit. It records hours of wav audio in stereo at upto 24/96. But best of all, it looks like a mobile phone! You can sneak it in anywhere and know one gets wise to it (unlike my old field rig, which was all boom arms and fuzzy windjammers, lol). Iv been sampling everything and anything with it.
Ok, sorry, muso / techy rant...
Please proceed with your thread

well as you may know... piano is the easiest to start off with and gets harder... vs guitar being the opposite.
my mom is the best... it's my opinion. she's my idol. :) it was a great honar to be exposed to her whole scene and all the famous people... except for so many concerts... i wanted to hear disco or 80's music most of time!
but all the flamanco... i feel so lucky to have been able to see it all... all the best of each field over our house and my mom did the flamanco too. she trained the some olympics for ballet and at a private school and taught piano when wasn't performing... then in 30's did flamanco.
we're not spanish either!
nice to know i have some people here on the forum with interests to share with on personal levels. not just having a disease in common with. :)

Yeah, Waldorf are back up and running again, right?
I wonder if we'll see some more products! I used to have a Q, was my pride and joy. I always wanted a Microwave XT but never got around to buying one. Now I hate midi with such a passion that I just cant get my head around having on.
Flamenco is so cool. I studied a little. I love how 'free' it is, improvised. And how the various expressive forms (song, dance, music) all form into one. Really amazing.
Did you know that the vocal melodies are often microtonal? Sometimes even polytonal with the accompaniment?
Lol, I thought that kind of madness was reserved for the C20th nut cases like Penderecki and co. But it seems to be a natural part of flamenco.
I must admit, the Spanish culture is growing on me more and more by the day. Im actually learning to speak Spanish too... in an attempt to rid myself of ultimate gringo status, lol. Tocar la guitarra flamenca, hablar espanol y comer chorizo... all I need now is good sun tan, lol.
Wow, you have the Legacy controller?
I love that thing, but dont have one. My studio doesnt have the space unfortunately. Its a look a like of the MS10, right? Now that is a synth that I WOULD make room for. Acid lines gallore!
Sorry Skywolf... at it again!

What a great topic, i've often wondered about peoples screen names too.
Mine came about because one day when i was flushing and getting upset about it, my husband pointed out that i just matched my PJ's, which had frogs on them that had red cheeks. At the time i joined the forum i had just starting working from home and was living in my PJ's (just because i could!) and so froggirl was the name that popped into my head.
Actually i spotted later in Jen's photo's that she had the same PJ's at some point. Must be the perfect thing for Australian rosaceans to wear! Lol

I joined the forum while I was putting in my garden. I have over 200 lavender (the deer don't eat it) and 17 varieties (even a pink one!). Twickle Purple is a lavender (hence my avatar) that lines my walkway. It is very low in camphor (less than 1%) which is what most people have a problem with that react to lavender. My yard smells like heaven and is full of butterflies and bees all summer.

I have lots of blondemoments..LOL (am really a blonde too-so very apt). Like the time I went to watch my son play cricket. Saw another mum, who's son played in the same team.
Picture this..she is standing, wind blowing gently creating a sillohette of her side profile. Hands resting protectively on her upper stomach..sort of perched there( that pregnant maternal look). She did not appear overweight, fine facial features, arms....As I did not know her I gazed at her for a long time to make sure she was in the motherly way...wouldnt want to offend. Yes she was definately at least 5-6mths preganant. "When is your baby due?" I asked very politely. She looked at me for a while and replied( with acid in her voice..very politely) " I'm not pregnant , just fat "....What could I say...not even sorry... I was so mortified...   and I had even double checked, triple checked and checked again..Oh the story doesn't end there....I then found out she was the club presidents wife   Oh my.....Needless to say it took her two years to talk to me again....Now even though a woman is about to drop her bundle so to speak I say nothing till I see them with baby in hand LOL LOL

I remember a time that I picked up the phone and tried about 4 or 5 times to get through to the number. Each time it was engaged. Guess what?! I was ringing my OWN number!!!

I've had plenty of blonde moments myself!
There are so many that I have lost count
One that was particularly mortifying was when I was a bridesmaid at a friends wedding when I was in college. She knew my family very well (used to come home with me weekends that I visited my parents) but I had never met her family. Well, the day of the wedding came and this woman came over (she looked like my friend but much older) and I said, Hi, you must be Debbie's mother, It's so great to meet you! congratulations! You could have heard a pin drop...it was her sister. Who was not too nice and walked away in a huff. What a b---h. I mean, I was young and earnest and she could have laughted it off. Give me a break. It was a happy occasion and lighten up a bit. You know what I mean. Well, I was so embarrassed. Luckily, I didn't have rosacea yet or my face would have stayed crimson for the rest of the day LOL.
Best wishes,
