Not to start a fight or anything, (she says knowing darn well it will, lol, but a silly not real important in the greater scheme of thing debate)
My neighbor has 2 big chimes up. It was nice for about a week, spring had sprung, the weather was nice, the tinkly sound was soothing with my doors open smelling everyone manicaly firing up their grills to BBQ. Now it has become annoying. It is very windy here in the windy city, and it now is a nusance, and dangerous, as a piece of one of the chimes blew off right in front of my back door, I usually go barefoot, broken glass +bare feet, not good. I also just cant take the constant noise now, it never stops, ever. They are very pretty, one is a sunburst sort of deal, the other is a wood one that looks very expensive. But enough already, I want quiet back.

Hi Laura,

That's a difficult situation. I know just how you feel. The wind chimes are nice at first but then the constant noise can be quite annoying.

But since there is a safety issue at hand you have a good reason to approach your neighbors ( in the nicest and friendliest of ways ie nonconfrontational) and explain that since it's so windy the chimes are prone to breaking like they just did. You can say that you really think they're lovely but since they will tend to break off it is a safety hazard because others can injure themselves (and animals also).

I live in NY so peace is nonexistent and the constant noise can be stressful. There are studies that show you are definitelyaffected by noise (even low grade) and after a while you don't even realize it but it is harmful.

There is certainly no easy solution here but hopefully your neighbors will be sensitive to your feelings. I wish you the best of luck with this problem.
Perhaps you can also bring over something to them as an offering like toys for their kids (if they have them) or home baked cookies or something like that. Just so they know you bear them no ill will.

All the best,
Melissa

PS We live in a Co-op and often deal with difficult neighbors. There is a definite art form in dealing with different personalities but it can be successfully done if you size them up correctly and approach them in the best way possible. Let me know what you decide to do and how it works out. Good luck!

I also thought about the issue with animals getting hurt, we have a resident stray cat here that most of us feed and give water to, etc, she is always around, in the area of the chimes. I would hate if she hurt her little feet.
Thats a good idea, bringing over some food, I am a good cook, and with Easter tomorrow, sharing leftovers could be just the ticket.
Thanks!

Laura

The broken part that landed by my door was kind of funny in a way, it was the sun face part ot it. I dont know if any of you have seen the commercial, I dont think it has played in a while, the animated sun pops off the orange juice bottle and completly freaks out the Mom and daughter, now running and screaming to get away. Funny because most other comercials treat a cartoon character just becoming animated before your eyes from your breakfast food as a normal part of life, sorry, I would run and scream.

throw it on the floor, making sure it is badly broken, then scatter a few feathers around it so that it looks like a bird did it.

you could also ask to wheel and deal with them... just have the chimes out for certain hours and/or days.

and obviously.. nothing used that can break and shatter like that.... and make sure it's tightly secured to where it's hung. but you're right... this is chicago!
i've never experienced wind like this... my windows often make a slam noise from the gusts.

also... they could hang it inside and have a window opened!

The wheeling and dealing would not work, he is gone at work long hours and his partner is very shy, there was, sadly, lots of gossip going around when they moved in, ( I live in a small appt complex, every one knows your business, can get quite annoying as my other neighbor is gossip central, Im the Pagan (read satan worshipper) that lives next to the gay guys, )
The chimes do have to go. For real though, listning to them now, it is so not soothing anymore. Im about to ninja atttack in the wee hours of the night and cut the things down, (Scattering feathers and blaming it on a bird, lol)

I work in an environmental helth department and we get this sort of complaint at work all the time. Noise is just everywhere now and its so hard to find any peace and quiet.

Definetly best if you approach it in a considered way. Explain that although they are lovely they are just abit constant. Could they move them away from your house at all?

Either that or you sneek over their in the dead of the night and just make them disappear.http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n60/phlika29/ninja1-1.gif

If I understand your position correctly, you have little to worry about.

Before long those chimes will be 'rearranged'. *

Terrible thing, stereotyping.

GJ,
No no no, Im not sterotyping them at all, i though all the gossip was terrible and hateful. Its just the wind chimes that bother me, they are very close to my kitchen window so very loud inside my appartment and the sound is constant. Also, I was just venting saying I would cut them down in the night, I would never do that, its vandalism and against the law, and my morals

Hey Laura!

I do not think, for one minute, that you are stereotyping or that you have criminal tendencies (although Moomy's plan is not without a hint of genius..)

I do think, however, that I am stereotyping, for which I chided myself with the rolling eyes.

:D :D :D

Ah. Thought you were rolling your eyes at me, thinking i was a wind chime killer! LOL
Moomys plan DOES have a certain appeal however.... Nah, I will behave myself

Hey there Laura

Have to say that I like wind chimes. I have an Asian wooden one, that 'rings' dull sort of wood tones (bamboo). That is, I don't believe it would be annoying to my neighbours. If it was, I would take it down straight away! I would not however go for the glass or metal ones unless I lived a fair distance away from my neighbours...like when I move soon. :D

I do have 3 big dogs (Siberian Huskies) next door to me and they howl like the wind...so to speak! It's soooo LOUD!!! Unbelievably LOUD!!! It's like the sound the monkeys make when you walk through the monkey area at the zoo. Unbelievable! To me, that is major noise polution! I haven't complained to the local Council, as they are my tenants!!! Other neighbours have complained! Yeay! :D

Can you ask your neighbour to put the non-dangerous wind chimes at the front of their place? Would that make any difference to you? I would ask them to remove the dangerous wind chimes though. That is reasonable. Hopefully they are reasonable people to approach.

Best of luck! Let us know the outcome.

Luv Jen x
