Christmas lights

Anyone know if the red LED Christmas lights would work? If they are the right nm, seems like you could attach them to a board and have an instant array.

Maybe you could find out the wavelength of the red led christmas lights?

Otherwise you don't have to spend $600. I bought an elixa red light array and it was only about $100, even with postage to Australia. I think the other cheap seller is the LED man.

Dumb question - would just one big red light bulb on a regular lamp held closeby work?

That's a sensible question, one I'm sure others have considered.

Any "light" with the correct wavelength will work. The key is the wavelength. Even brightness (MCD) is secondary because, in the end, a less bright light will affect the same results in these applications. The source of the light (halogen, LED or flourescent) is a decision made for different reasons than wavelength. An incandescent or halogen bulb give off a fair degree of heat which makes them undesirable for this use.
