Firstly, I would like to intorduce myself to the group as I just joined the other day. My rosacea symptoms include facial erythema and some ocular symptoms. The severity I would say is between mild to moderate.

Anyways, about 4 months ago I had a complete blood work. In the results I found out that I had a slightly low platelet count. The normal range for platelets is 150-450. My platelet readings were 135. After doing a little research I found that one of the platelets main functions is to repair damaged or broken blood vessels. Well, knowing that rosacea is a disorder that effects the blood vessels, I find these results very intriguing. I then looked at my blood test from the one that I had done previous to this one and my platelet levels were normal (180). On the lower end, but still normal. The test with a normal platelet count was done in 2001. I did not have any rosacea symptoms then.

You can read more about platelets here : http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/platelet_function/glance.html

What do ya'll think?

Hi PhillipV, and welcome to the forum.

I understand that the normal ranges can have some variance depending on the individual, which is why you would want to someone trained to look at the whole picture to properly interpret the numbers. What does your doctor say?

My doctor didn't say too much about it. I mentioned it to him and he claimed that it isn't really of big concern unless the platelet numbers drop to around 100.

Will you go back for a check up to see if the downward numbers continue?

On the same topic, I have 'thalasemia trait'. Its been believed for years that having the trait has no effect on the individual, but reent evidence is suggesting its linked to problems. Anyhow on the blood front, isomeone with the trait had deformed and very small red blood cells, i always wonder if this has an effect. Possibly in a lessened ability toi carry oxygen an dhence circulation problesm

I don't think I have thalassemia. But I recently had a blood test and it turns out I'm mildly anemic (cause unknown thus far). Maybe everyone with rosacea should have a blood test, although I doubt the link is direct these things could be contributing factors.
