here is a pic of a mild flare up, u can see the spots on both sides of my nose, and when it gets really bad, the redness and itchy goes to my upper lip and cheeks too. and now that its getting colder, the itchness and spots are showing up on my forehead. ive never been to a derm, only doctor, he gave me some strong hyrdrocortisone. thinking about seeing a derm or something to try some metrogel.

Hi

Hard to tell, from the picture it looks kind of like seb derm but can't really tell! So sorry i'm not much help really!

Seeing a derm might be a good idea.

I get seb derm and for me it is usually worse on the forehead nose and around the nose and eyebrows. I do use hydrocortisone on it but would not use anything stronger than the 1% and even then use it sparingly.

Maybe have a look at these and see if any of them match with what you have:

I also think that you may have abit of seb derm. Does it look abit rough and shiny?

I think you should go to your doc and see what they say. It might be worth taking an antihistamine (something like clarityn) as this can help with the redness and itching if it is seb derm.

My boyfriend gets something very similar and it helps if he puts on some jojoba oil (from health food shop or chemist). Be careful though just put abit on a test patch for a couple of days to see how you go.

I have seb derm it's quiet mild but still drives me mad when it itches. I'v started drinking a glass of half a freshly squezed lemon in warm water every morning as well as useing nizoral and have found it really seems to help

you definetely have Seb derm around the upper lip, forhead, and sides of the nose. I have it in similiar spots as you. You have to make sure to not grow a mustache and keep your hair short. Other than that you should make sure to wash your scalp and face with rotating dandruff shampoos (other than coal tar shampoos). Make sure you use a conditionaer after shampoon as well as all those dandruff shamposs like Nizoral dry out your skin.

If your condition worsens dont hesitate to go to the doctor for help.

Also diet plays a big role in the severity of dermatitis. Cut down on the sugary food and high fat, high salt fast foods... Drink lots of water.

half of my diet is organic food, no fast food (besides the pizza, i work at a pizza place, always just cheese), i eat lots of whole grain bread though which i think was bad for the condition cause of hte yeast or something, i work out 4 times a week and i drink about a gallon of water every day. yea when hte hair on my lip gets long it starts breaking out, and sometimes shaving it can make it worse. its such a pain in the ass. and ive learned that if i try to grow my hair out, my scalp gets super itchy and feels like something bad is about to happen lol. so i always keep it short.i think im gonna try the cool calm and collected stuff.

Ray - Cheese (and dairy products) is a major cause of many skin problems. Working out is good, but you need to make sure to shower and wash your skin after each workout. The thing with Seb Derm is it cause and effect relationship are from the hair and oil glands.. So if you have oily skin you will get a worse infection because your skins immune system cannot fight the infection. (thats what the seb derm immune system relationship is thought off).

I use Jason Natural Cosmetics Tea Tree Scalp Normalizing Shampoo for dandruff control. Its the best shampoo I've tried as its got natural ingredients that dont irritate the scalp and its cheap. They sell it at Whole Foods or on the web:

/also if you can make your 1st image smaller as its hard to read the replies. I think imageshack allows to resize the images.

I agree with the previous posts, it looks like the Seb Derm. Will you have a doctor look at it? It's always best to have them check you out, they have a complete picture of your health and can provide some direction for you. Whatever it is, I hope you are able to get it under control.

For it to be seb derm your skin has to be oily, I don't detect any oilyness on your pics. Perhaps your doc will give you to try metrogel.

If you are currently using anything harsh on your face like the typical OTC acne medications like acid exfoliators, BP, retin, or face washes, it's a good idea to stop it for two weeks to see if the face normalizes.

Hi Ray

It can be quite difficult to give advice from a pic and/or what is written. None of us are qualified to diagnose, as far as I am aware. We can only give you our personal feedback from our own experiences/reading.

I would also suspect Seborrhoeic Dermatitis but perhaps that along side Rosacea, only because of the break outs you have mentioned, which would indicate to me that there may be some oily prob too? Oh maybe also because it doesn't appear to just be centralised, with things going on, on your cheeks and forehead.

I wouldn't go the cortisone route. See what a Dermatologist has to say first about a diagnosis. The links that Kate put up for DermNetNZ make a great reference.

I would suggest some of the natural oils to try, like Rose Hip Oil, Emu Oil, Jojoba Oil, Hemp Seed Oil. You only need a few drops. If that interests you, feel free to e-mail me. Don't worry, I don't sell anything!

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents worth, for what it's worth.

Jen

P.S. My sister used to live in Ontonagon. I know, totally irrelevant but thought I would add that, since it's such a long way from Australia! :)

my face gets pretty oily when its broken out. like right now it itches and i can feel it and i can wipe my finger along my face and see all the oil on my finger.(all shiny). i always shower after i workout, and i use a natural shampoo called JASON along with JASON conditioner, its like 5.50 a bottle for each. its supposed to be alot better than regular shampoo. i normally dont have a problem with dandruff on my scalp anymore. when i get break outs its normally very ruff feeling and bumpy, is that what rosacea is like too? or just seb derm?

When I break out, my skin is rough and bumpy from the p&p's. I hate it! I don't have SD.

Maybe those with SD could explain what it is like for them, if they get break outs too.

Treat it as seb derm but whatever you do don't use any type of steriod cream for any long period of time. You look exactly like i did before I overused steriod creams on my seb derm and developed rosacea.
