I was wondering if anyone has had their eyes done to correct their vision after being diagnosed with o.r. I seem to be having trouble wearing my contacts.....the next day my eyes are beet red! So it's either glasses or surgery. I am a little afraid of lasers going into my eyes...but my vanity would like to try it.
My opthamologist says I can do it, but my optomitrist thinks it shouldn't be done.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks,

Bev

Hi Bev,

My eyes can't handle contacts at all, so I wear glasses. I used to have well over a dozen pair that I would treat more like accessories. But the plastics and nose pads finally got to me so it's titanium-nosepadless-only kinds now. I've heard that some eye surgeries are not successful and it's not a risk I'm comfortable taking with my eyes. I would be very hesitant as your eyes are not 100% because of the OR.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply--I'm sure it's a risk no matter what the conditions of the eyes, but having o.r. makes me think more than twice about it.

I would love to hear from anyone who has actually had the proceedure.

BevHi-

Lasiks will only make OR worse imo...You're removing a layer of the cornea, essentially reshaping it & so too are taking away protection. A common side effect of Lasik is extremely dry eye & OR presents enough of that. I think a lot of glass wearers wind up settling on very light framed glasses.

Taking supplements like Hydro Eye (sciencebasedhealth.com) & Thera Tears might make your contacts more bearable...And ones that are breathable that allow a lot of oxygen through might be best. Beware too of the solutions used to clean them & put them in. They could contain irritating things.

Restasis is also something ppl have looked into though personally I'm leery of it over the long term.

Wish I had answers but best of luck.

Heyas,
New to the forums, but had to respond when I read this.
I had rosacea at a young age, but I also have freckles and because of my pale complexion I just thought I blushed alot or something.
At 18 I decided to do Laser surgery (PRK), a month right after, my cornea's went nuts, ulcers left and right, my blepharitis went nuts and then eventually I had to have two corneal transplants due to rosacea keratitis since my cornea's perforated. I'm 24 now and still struggle with this, I just had a corneal transplant 3 months ago at Bascom Palmer here in Miami. I've been on Doxycycline for about 6 years now and predforte, and it doesn't look like I'll be off any of those anytime soon.
I wouldn't recommend surgery, at 18 I wanted to just not wear glasses and now, I regret it...I'd much rather wear my dorky glasses than have to deal with continual graft rejections and steroid injections into my eyes to keep from rejecting.

I wish you the best of luck though, maybe I was just unlucky.

Hi,

Lasik is definitely contraindicated in people with ocular rosacea. Your cornea is already compromised. My advice is don't do lasik. Lasik will make your eyes even drier. A good and reputable lasik surgeon won't do surgery on a cornea that's compromised in any way.

There are lots of other options out there.
There's a new one day disposable contact lens on the market for dry eyes. It's called one day Moist by Acuvue.
Use preservative-free rewetting drops every hour if necessary.
Do lid scrubs at night or twice a day if you have blepharitis.
It really depends on your symptoms as there is a huge range.

Whatever you do though, please don't do Lasik.

All the best,
Melissa
